Harp Intro

A harp is a stringed musical instrument in which the belly or resonator is nearly perpendicular to the plane of the strings. It has strings stretched from the soundbox to the neck that are plucked to produce sound.

The main types of harps are the lever harps and pedal harps. Lever harps are usually known as Clarsach or Celtic harps, while pedal harps are usually referred to as orchestral or concert harps.

Harps either be electric or electro-acoustic and vary in size, shape, and sound. In pedal harps, the harpist uses pedals to raise and lower the notes, while in lever harps, the player uses levers.

History Of The Harp

Evidence shows that harps may have been in use in Ancient Egypt as early as 2500 BC. They were angular or bow-shaped and had very few strings. They didn’t have a column to support much string tension. Harps have undergone several changes throughout the years, and they now support up to 47 strings.

Typical Harp Sound

The player plucks the strings to create a sound similar to a guitar. The harp’s strings are like keys on a piano. The black or blue strings of a harp are Fs, while the red strings are Cs. Harpists use their thumb and first three fingers to play the harp.

Three Harp Playing Tips

Many people think they are not perfect at playing harp because they aren’t practicing enough. Here are some smart tips that will help you get the best out of your harp practice:

  1. Experiment and write notes – when practicing different fingering, take notes on what works best for you. It will help you keep perfecting what works for you.
  2. Trim your fingernails – You should keep your fingernails short when playing the harp, especially if you don’t want a brassy sound.
  3. Pray around with the strings – Don’t wait until you can read music and know all the notes to start playing. You can produce a nice sound with what you already know. It is true that you will have to learn all notes and how to read music, but that shouldn’t worry you as a beginner.
