The Concert Flute Intro

A flute is a member of the woodwind musical instrument despite being made of metals. Unlike other woodwind instruments, a flute does not have a reed. They are available in different shapes, but most of them are tubular and globular. One plays this instrument by directing the breath into a mouthpiece that directs the air against the edge of an opening or hole elsewhere in the flute. Some flutes have a hole on the side while others have it on the top.

History Of The Flute

Flutes are the oldest woodwind musical instruments. They were around even before 900 B.C. The first flute emerged in China and was known as ch-ie. During the 1100s, flutes were widely used in military signaling and courtly music. Due to the desire to improve their sound, manufacturers have been trying to use different materials and improve on their designs. They were initially made from hollowed wood or bone.

Typical Flute Sound

Flutes are reedless. A flutist plays it by directing air across the mouthpiece (embouchure hole) and pressing down the keys on its side. Blow air into the mouthpiece to create a sound. Standard flutes have a pitch range of three octaves, but an experienced flutist can play an octave higher.

By pressing the keys on the sides, one can block the air flowing inside the tube, allowing one to create higher and lower notes. The flutist varies the airflow into the mouthpiece to affect the volume and pitch of the sound.

Three Flute Playing Tips

Flutes are relatively easier to play while requiring lots of practice to master the sound production and consistency. Here are a few tips to help while playing the flute.

  1. Relax your bottom lip. It acts as a reed for the clarinet and should remain flat or curved into a frown when you are playing.
  2. If you have a thick bottom lip, place the mouthpiece on the red part. People with a thin bottom lip should place it under the curve of the chin).
  3. If you have crooked bottom teeth, angle the flute in a way that it can accommodate them.
