Double Bass Musical Instrument Intro
Double bass, also known as the string bass, bass fiddle, bass viol, or bass, is the lowest-pitched member of the violin family. It sounds an octave lower than a cello. It has two main designs, one resembles a violin, while the other one looks like a viol. There are designs such as a guitar, but the aforementioned two are the most common.
Double bass instruments vary in size. The largest is about 1.8 meters long. Double bass instruments have four heavy string pitches, but some jazz band basses have an additional fifth string. Some double basses, instead of having the fifth string, has a mechanical device with levers, to increase the length of the fourth string. That device allows the bassist to lower the pitch of E string to E♭, D, D♭, or C when a lower pitch is needed.
History Of The Double Bass
The progenitor of the double bass musical instruments is the bass viola da gamba that was developed by Silvestro Ganassi at around 1652 in Venice. The internal construction of a double bass is nearly identical to that of instruments in the violin family, but its exterior resembles viola da gamba.
