Cello Musical Instrument Intro
Cello is a bowed or plucked string musical instrument of the violin family. It is an improvement of the bass violin. The playing ranges of music instruments in the violin family overlap each other, but physical size and tone distinguish them. Cello is an abbreviation of the word violoncello, an Italian word meaning small-large viol. A person who plays a cello is known as a cellist or a violoncellist.
History Of The Cello
The origin of the base violin is not yet known, but it seems like it first appeared in its present size and tuning. Many improvements in terms of material and number of strings have been made over the years. In the early years, cello strings were made out of sheep intestines (gut), but now manufacturers are using metal wiring. In the 18th century, it was possible to find a 5 strings Celli in Germany, Flemish, and Dutch areas.
Different cello manufacturers are now using different materials, but most of them are still using wood. Luis & Clark construct their cellos from carbon fiber. German Luthier G.A constructs their cellos from aluminum. Carbon fiber cellos are the best for outdoor playing because they are resistant to both temperature and humidity fluctuations.
Typical Cello Instrument Sound
A cello has a unique sound that is not as whiny as that of a violin. It has a rich and deeply layered sound that is almost similar to a human voice. Cellos sound is so appealing to our ears because it’s range is quite similar to that of a person’s vocal range.
A cello has four strings that are tuned in perfect fifths: A3, C2, G2, and D3. The music for cello is written in the bass cleft. The treble clef and tenor clef is for higher-range passages. Aluminum, chromium, and titanium strings are the most common in modern cellos. Some cellos have different types of strings. Whether it has an aluminum or titanium string, your cello will produce a great tone.
