Acoustic Guitar Intro
A guitar is a stringed instrument with frets to indicate the location of various pitches along the strings. Usually, a guitar has 6 strings, but some variations have 12 strings. A guitar is a chordophone, that is, an instrument that generates sounds by the vibration of the strings. An acoustic guitar is to be distinguished from an electric guitar.
An acoustic guitar has a hollow wooden chamber that projects the sound generated by the strings. An electric guitar uses electrical and electronic means to amplify the sound which is played over a speaker. Guitars perhaps are the most popular musical instrument in the world.
History Of The Acoustic Guitar Instrument
Guitar-like instruments span most of human recorded history (around 4000 years). The modern 6 string acoustic guitar has a long history going back to the Renaissance. Guitars bear some resemblance to the medieval lute. Predecessors to the modern acoustic guitar include the gittem, the vihuela, the four-course Renaissance guitar, and the five-course baroque guitar. The modern guitar took its current form in Spain around 1850.
Guitars also come in a variety of body shapes. An acoustic electric guitar is an acoustic guitar with a magnetic pickup, a piezoelectric pickup, or a microphone. This allows the guitar to be plugged into an amplifier with the sound played on a speaker. Other than the ability to amplify or record the sound more cleanly, an acoustic electric guitar sounds virtually the same as an acoustic guitar.
Typical Acoustic Guitar Sound
The acoustic guitar produces sound when the strings are struck. The vibration of the strings is amplified by the sound box (the main, hollow body) of the guitar. The sound resonates and reflects outward producing the sound people recognize as the guitar sound. Frets on the neck of the instrument indicate the location of various pitches on the musical scale. Typically, the 6 string guitar is tuned E2 A2 D3 G3 B3 E4.
